Controlling Liquid Crystal Orientations for Programmable Anisotropic Transformations in Cellular Microstructures (Adv. Mater. 42/2021)

چکیده
Programmable Anisotropic Transformations In article number 2105024, Joanna Aizenberg, Katia Bertoldi, and co-workers report that by programming independently anisotropy at the molecular structural levels, unprecedented director-determined symmetry breaking can be realized in microcellular structures made of liquid crystalline elastomers (LCEs). These exploited to achieve switchable direction-dependent frictional properties as well modulate light.

Lyotropic Liquid Crystal Phases from Anisotropic Nanomaterials
Liquid crystals are an integral part of a mature display technology, also establishing themselves in other applications, such as spatial light modulators, telecommunication technology, photonics, or sensors, just to name a few of the non-display applications. In recent years, there has been an increasing trend to add various nanomaterials to liquid crystals, which is motivated by several aspect...
متن کاملAnisotropic liquid crystal gels for switchable polarizers and displays
An anisotropic liquid crystal gel with low operating voltage, high contrast ratio, broad bandwidth, wide viewing angle, and fast response time was demonstrated. In the voltage-off state, the gel is highly transparent. When the gel is activated by an electric field, light scattering occurs for the polarization along the molecular axis. By incorporating a l/4 film between the gel and a reflector,...
متن کاملMetamaterials: Snapping Mechanical Metamaterials under Tension (Adv. Mater. 39/2015).
By exploiting snap-through instabilities, D. Pasini and co-workers design a damage-tolerant mechanical metamaterial that snaps sequentially under tension, thereby accommodating a very large deformation up to 150%. On page 5931, they describe how the nonlinear mechanical response of the metamaterial can be robustly programmed by tuning the architecture of its unit cell.
متن کاملControlling the Alignment of Polyimide for Liquid Crystal Devices
Liquid crystal (LC) devices have been popular for use in photonics products, such as displays for mobile phones, televisions and computers. As shown in Fig. 1, a typical LC device consists of a thin LC layer sandwiched between a pair of indium tin oxide (ITO) conducting glass substrates with a cell gap of few micrometers. Polyimide (PI) as a polymeric material characterized by its outstanding m...
متن کاملComment on vortex liquid crystal in anisotropic type II superconductors.
Comment on " Vortex Liquid Crystal in Anisotropic Type II Superconductors " Recently Carlson et al. [1] tried to compose the H − T phase diagram of anisotropic superconductors based on the Lindemann criterion for melting of flux-line lattice. It is worthy to notice that the issue itself is interesting. However, their conclusion on the existence of a smectic vortex phase is unphysical for the fo...
